Chaos legion

CL – a game, prefixed to the bone marrow. There she was born, there she will gather the bulk of fans, there she even looks and plays better – in connection with which we offer our interested people a read in the section of our site devoted to games for Playstation-2 (there it will appear in the coming days). Here we will confine ourselves to a small review of its essence. Because, for the picky taste of a PC gamer, a thing can be felt as very, very ambiguous – although this is one of the few products that allow using the “PC only one” to touch the world of console action, as it is, and not some, but original Japanese, because the developer is the legendary Capcom.

There is, in fact, everything that is supposed to have an anime-inspired game.

The undoubted, in the Japanese spirit style is a free adaptation of Gothic-demonic motifs. A touching and sublime plot affecting the beauty and corruption of the world and the people in it. Expressive characters that cause sincere sympathy and antipathy. Monstrous, hypertrophied weapons, magic, horrifying, huge creatures. In the world there are many lovers of such a combination of ingredients – and if you are not one of them, then perhaps you simply have not tried this cocktail, properly prepared.
Although Chaos Legion is not ideal for starting to explore this world – it would be better to start with classics such as Devil May Cry (which no, no and peeps in the ideology of CL) – nevertheless it is a good game. She is focused much more on the “meat” extermination of huge numbers of monsters (let’s say, on consoles you rarely see SUCH hordes) – so this is ideologically something like Serious Sam, you only have to act with a sword, and not with a gun arsenal. However, there is a fundamental difference from the majority of “chopping action games” – instead of the character’s many opportunities, all sorts of ways to improve it personally and educate the player individual skills in it (all this is typical for the best action games on consoles), the game relies on a “strategic element” , which is not so complicated as to make the game “boring” for fans of the battle, but at the same time not primitive.

In this case, we are talking about the possibility of calling for help demonic “legions” – each of them has strengths and weaknesses, each is capable of improving your leadership in the process of battles and victories, and if you are lucky to collect all the pieces of the most powerful, ultimate legion, then you can once again enjoy the power entrusted to you at the very beginning of the game (and you quickly and inevitably lost) – the monstrous Thanatos. Only two types of legions can be called up at a time, so each time you have to decide whether you are actively attacking assistants, or who can defend you, or who can shoot at a distance, or who give you special abilities, or who have unique skills (for example, finding hidden items).

Adapting your combat tactics to the abilities of the army at your disposal, skillfully applying magic items, just learning to act faster and more efficiently – you advance along a very linear story, and in the pauses between fights, the videos will immerse you more and more into its essence ( There are a lot of videos in the game, so there is a fair fear – have they all entered the single-disc PC version?). The levels are also very linear, they consist of passable “scenes” one after another – that is, it is like battles in Japanese role-playing games against more and more “packs” of monsters, only in dynamics. Unfortunately, the levels are not at all as expressive as they usually are in PS2 hits, and they are pretty uniform in design – it is obvious that huge numbers of monsters take away too many resources from the machine. On the PC, the situation does not change – apparently due to the fact that this is a pretty direct port, without significant alteration for the capabilities of the new platform (accordingly, on the PC everything looks “technically” significantly worse than modern hits). Management on the PC version also seemed less convenient than on the PS2 joysticks, even if you have a gamepad.

An interesting find for those who do not quit playing halfway is finding the second character. Unlike the demonic swordsman Ziga, the vengeful two-gun gunfighter Archia (attention, all the fans of Lara Croft!) Does not know how to summon creatures from the underworld to help, but more than compensates for this with dexterity and firepower. The bad thing is that for it you can pass only one level. The good thing is that after completing the game for the first time with Zig, Archia opens up as the main game character (which allows you to actually rebuild the game in a completely new style).

Summarizing – this game takes rather originality and originality for this audience. Guaranteed to be crazy about her will be fans of anime, gothic, demonic creatures and simply “huge, terrible monsters”, as well as most romantics – because games are rarely found.
