Secret Weapons over Normandy

Well – LucasArts is literally gaining momentum right before our eyes, restoring the former glory of one of the best, and more importantly, the “unmistakable” publishers of the PC gaming market. StarWars role-playing games were half the battle, after all, who should release games in the SW universe if not LA? But the magnificent absolutely Armed and Dangerous, and now also the super-duper SWoN is no longer an accident, it is already a trend.

When you see the cover of Secret Weapons on a three-disc for the first time, it’s very easy to be deceived, assuming that a normal atmosphere in this toy will require a specialized aviation joystick and a careful study of the five-volume guide “Flying for Beginners”. Not at all – the game is just very simple, focused completely on the ordinary gamer, and almost everyone, regardless of his gaming preferences, can bring some pleasure.

This, of course, is a simulator – but the simulator is extremely arcade, adapted much more for uncomplicated fun than for a plausible imitation of reality.

Secret Weapons over Normandy
Only two preliminary facts very vividly confirm this assessment of his. Firstly, this game is multi-platform, console-PC simultaneously, Secondly, the most convenient way to play it is the standard modern gamepad with two analog sticks (although the more advanced “aviation control” is supported too).

Secret Weapons over Normandy
Of course, the first question that arises for sophisticated gamers is what about the graphics. Because – what a simulator for presentation can be, everything is so roughly represented. Well, the console is not adapted for serious landscape synthesis, what to do. To the great joy of fans of arcade sims, we can assure them that everything is in order with the graphics.
We have not been able to see the prefixes yet – but the PC version did not disappoint in this regard. Of course, the landscape is not considered to be a “direct honest way”: each “scene” is designed to look good with a set of ingenious graphic tricks in the right combinations – but does it really matter if it turns out to be very impressive overall.
Of course, due to some “cartoon”. Of course, if you decline very closely, it will not be very good – but anyway, in terms of synthesizing the situation, the game will give many points ahead of most competitors, plus its “minimum heights, where beauty is still preserved” will probably be lower. And at the same time, she didn’t have to resort to the “magic of Christmas decorations”, as the same Gunmetal or Aquila do – the illusion of realism of the usual terrestrial landscape is fully respected.

There is, however, one concession to lovers of special effects – if you approve of one of the positions in the graphic options, you will get high-speed smearing, blues. And it will be beautiful to you, almost like in Need for Speed Underground 🙂 However, the effects are good and ordinary – the explosions of the bombs are excellent, the smoke and fires of the aircraft – too, the affected cars are falling apart in the air in good order. Everywhere, of course, you feel the script, the cartoon – but this does not interfere with the arcade player, unless it really touches the realist.

It also works well with sound accompaniment – remotely audible music exactly recreates the atmosphere of an old war movie (the action takes place, as everyone probably understood by name – during the Second World War). Dives, breaks, negotiations between their own and enemy pilots – the sound atmosphere completely absorbs “background attention”.

And the booming metal “sounds of your bullets hitting the enemy’s body” bring real pleasure if you can suppress the understanding that at such a great distance they cannot be heard to you with such glaring clarity. Well, wasn’t Lucas famous for loud explosions even in airless space?

Models of aircraft and military equipment are not super detailed, but not bad. Water surfaces worry and reflect powerful carcasses of ships 🙂 The sun dazzles, but not much. But the most important graphic component, of course, is the “general cinematography of what is happening”, this is actually the “shooting of films about airplanes” in which you participate. All other ingredients are just the ingredients for this main course, which you can enjoy again, again and again. It is not for nothing that the “shooting” here is carried out by a “realistic shaking camera”, and the last 15 seconds of the flight are recorded in a “riplea buffer” – which you can enjoy not only posthumously, but generally at any time of the game from various points of view. The main key, however, to the super-entertainment of this thing is the camera system, the essence of which is clearly prompted by someone from the cinematic part of the Lucas company 🙂 Imagine a camera that, aiming at an air or ground target, keeps your combat vehicle in focus at the same time third person view. It’s as if your plane is connected to an enemy chosen by an invisible visual axis.
